You probably heard that pennies make dollars. You have a friend or family member that reaches down every time they see a penny on the ground. And that’s what they say.

“Pennies make dollars.”

What this means is that a little bit here and there adds up. And that’s what speed cleaning is. You do a little scrubbing here and some wiping over there. This adds up!

Speed cleaning isn’t a substitute for deep cleaning. These tactics are more like continuous maintenance of your home cleaning until you have enough time for a deep clean.

What’s cool about speed cleaning is that it doesn’t all have to be done at once.

You can do it in between Zoom meetings. Or during commercial breaks. Or in that sweet, glorious time you have to yourself after you put your kids to bed at night.

I love the convenience.

Speed cleaning requires that you have your cleaning supplies ready for action. Standing by at their posts ready to attach the enemy (i.e. dirt).

This comes down to tricking your mind and helping motivate your future self. You’re less likely to tackle even the simplest cleaning tasks if it takes you a while to find the cleaning supplies.

Especially if it takes longer to find the cleaning supplies than it does to do the entire clean.

I recommend that you buy a few totes for cleaning supplies. Keep one in the kitchen, one in the bathroom, and one in a hall closet.

You can customize the cleaning totes to fit your home’s specific needs. But you’ll want these go-to cleaning supplies in each one:

• Window cleaner
• Magic Eraser
• All-Purpose Cleaner
• Microfiber Cloths
• Paper Towels

Once you don’t have to worry about clutter, you can get to cleaning.

But can you clean your house in two hours? Yeah, pretty much. If you use the speed cleaning approach, have everything ready, and your home is already decluttered, you’ll be good to go.

Plus, you’ll have a head start with cleaning since you’ve been cleaning throughout the day, right?

So grab your cleaning gear. Go to the laundry room. And set your timer on for two hours. This will help keep you focused. Turn on some music and get to cleaning.

Here’s a roadmap that I recommend:

:05 Start a load of laundry.

:15 Clean the glass on storm doors and on windows that face the street.

:20 Put the contents of the laundry basket where each item belongs and throw out the trash.

:35 Head to the kitchen, load the dishwasher and wipe down the exterior of your appliances.

:40 Take the clean laundry from the washer and put it in the dryer.

:50 Sweep or vacuum your kitchen floor, wipe down your countertops, and take out the trash.

1:10 Go to the bathrooms and wipe down the toilet, sink, floor, bathtub, and shower. Change out towels and restock toilet paper. Clean the mirror, sink, and vanity.

1:30 Take a microfiber cloth and dust the busiest rooms of your home like the living room, den, and dining room.

1:50 Vacuum high-traffic carpet areas and sweep hard surface floors.

2:00 Remove your clean laundry from the dryer, fold, and put away.

When you need to get cleaning, but you don’t have as much time, I’ve got a little trick for you.

This may be different than your normal routine. And it doesn’t replace a full clean. But it comes in handy when you have some friends coming over, or some unexpected guests (i.e. your mother in law), or you just want your room clean.

The first steps come before – you need to have a decluttered space for this to work. And those little bits of cleaning that I mentioned before will help keep your room clean-ish anyway.

First things first:

• Grab a laundry basket.
• Throw everything that doesn’t belong in that room in the basket.
• Hide the basket somewhere out of sight until later.
• Fold blankets, fluff pillows, and wipe visible surfaces with a microfiber cloth.
• Vacuum or sweep.

Boom.

It’s not so much cleaning as it is hiding. But it’ll work.

By the way, this isn’t how we get things done at Town Mountain Maids. You won’t find a hidden basket of all the things you’ve left out under your bed.
